If you’re looking for romantic drama, think medieval home decor. This style should automatically conjure up images of castles, fairy tales and royalty. Now if you love this time period and want to recreate it in your own home, here are some medieval home decor ideas to get you going.

The medieval style is typically characterized by colourful rich fabrics, black iron ornaments and rustic elements. Getting a similar look doesn’t have to be pricey, and done correctly you won’t end up with a room that’s more appropriate on a theatre stage instead of a suburban home.

If you’re wondering where to start in creating a room with a medievil feel to it, try this suggestion. Sit back and image living back in the day, in a large stone castle. What does your room look like? Maybe it’s a large cold castle so you have a fireplace and lots of fur throws lying around. What do you imagine hanging on the walls? Maybe you imagine ornate tapestries or rich blue velvet curtains.

Now all these items can easily be recreated in today’s rooms and inexpensively. If you would love a fireplace but don’t have the real thing, try an electric model. There are many great styles to choose from today and they are quickly and easily assembled by one person.

Remember you want medieval home decor not a medieval movie set. Try to be subtle but still have fun with the style. Look for accessories and unique home decor items that remind you of the period. (Watch some old movies if it will help.) Most people would associate sconces with the medieval style. Try to buy a set of two matching iron sconces. These can be hung on either side of a painting, framing a doorway, or maybe a bed headboard. And if you don’t want to worry about wiring just get the candle holder models. They look more authentic anyway.

For a dramatic floor covering, consider purchasing an animal skin, hide rug. If you’re too much of an animal lover to be comfortable with this type of rug, then get a synthetic version that still looks realistic. For the walls consider painting them a stone grey color. To frame your windows consider hanging richly coloured velvet or velour draperies.

Don’t forget lots of scented candles and thick, colourful throws or blankets. Paisley fabric designs would also work well in a medieval style room. Tapestry art is the ideal art addition to walls, consider getting one if your budget allows. But again remember you can get medieval home decor without spending a lot. Think outside the box, an old wooden tree stump can make a great rustic end table.

Don’t be afraid to try something unusual and if you get stuck on ideas just watch a couple medieval period movies for ideas. Enjoy finding your medieval home decor as much as you do living in it.
