Music's Effect On Today's Society
We cannot deny that music plays a huge part in how we think and act. It also creates desires in us and dictates how we perceive things. For this reason, it is so important to analyze what we are allowing into our brains. If we are listening to music that promotes sex and violence, then these traits are sure to enter into our lives. There’s old adage of, “Your thoughts become your words; your words become your actions; your actions become your habits; your habits form your lifestyle.” Music does affect our thoughts, so let’s see what we are allowing into our lives.
Violence and sex in music
Beat and melody are nice to listen to, but many people don’t perceive that these two elements form gateways to get lyrics into our minds. A tune can be so catchy that we simply cannot get enough of it; and before we know it, we are singing along and tapping our feet. But many nice-sounding songs are pumping violent and sexual content into the minds of us and our kids.
Careless living
Another popular message promoted by modern music is the idea of following your heart. It may sound harmless, but many songs have lyrics similar to, “I’m free to do what I want to do.” This promotes a message of, “If it feels right, do it.” And “Do what makes you happy.” But if we all did what made us happy, we would inevitably do so at the expense of someone else’s happiness. We simply cannot live our lives free of consequence.
The importance of lyrics
Other lyrics are completely mindless. They make no sense at all. Songs used to be stories told in a musical form. Today, many songs are just beats with incoherent words that do not stimulate any kind of meaningful thinking whatsoever. We may not realize this but it does start to cause a kind of zombie effect on people—which may explain why so many people walk around with their heads in the clouds.
Music is an important part of our lives, but we must start taking note of what music we allow. Love songs can be quite beautiful if they convey a message of real love instead of promiscuity. When we start to put more emphasis on lyrics, our love for music is sure to evolve into something more meaningful than just pure melody and beat.
